What is Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an organ in the abdomen displaces due to the weakening of the muscles of abdomen or other part of body. Most common predisposing factors of Hernias are tobacco, smoking, poor nutrition, heavy weight lifting, chronic constipation, chronic cough, difficulty in urination etc. A hernia can occur in the abdomen, upper thigh area, belly button, or groins. A hernia can also occur in an infant due to the weakness in the muscles during birth.

  • Chronic constipation
  • Present since birth due to a congenital condition
  • Lifting heavy weights or strenuous exercises
  • Chronic coughing
  • Being obese or overweight

  • Lump or bulge in the affected area
  • Heaviness in the groin or abdomen
  • Feeling of pressure in the abdomen or groin
  • Pain during bowel movement or urination
  • Difficulty swallowing in case of hiatal hernia

A surgeon will diagnose a hernia in a physical examination. The diagnosis of a hernia is easier as a bulge in the area where the hernia is present will be visible. For an accurate diagnosis, a patient may be asked to stand, strain or cough. In addition, imaging tests such as an MRI, CT scan, or abdominal ultrasound might be needed if the bulge isn’t readily apparent or to confirm the physical diagnoses.
